Manchester City powers through to Champions League quarterfinals
Citizens crush FC Copenhagen 6-2 on aggregate
Mahrez brace seals emphatic victory
Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League quarterfinals with a convincing 6-2 aggregate victory over FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.
After a 2-1 win in Denmark last week, City needed only a draw at the Etihad to progress. Gabriel Jesus’ 35th-minute goal gave City the reassurance of an early lead, and the English champions never looked back.
Riyad Mahrez extended City's lead on the stroke of halftime with a stunning free kick, and the Algerian winger netted his second goal of the night six minutes after the restart to put the tie beyond doubt.
Copenhagen pulled a goal back through Viktor Claesson to give the scoreline a somewhat more respectable look, but City remained in complete control and could have scored more goals in the second half.
Kevin De Bruyne made it 4-1 in the 79th minute, before Erling Haaland scored his fifth goal of the Champions League campaign to make it 5-1 in the 90th minute.
Claesson did grab a second for Copenhagen in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but City ran out comfortable winners on aggregate.
Manchester City will now face Manchester United in the quarterfinals, in a mouthwatering clash between two of the fiercest rivals in English football.
