Rudolphus Franciscus Marie (Ruud) Lubbers, a prominent Dutch politician and diplomat, passed away on 14 February 2018 at the age of 78. As the Netherlands' youngest and longest-serving Prime Minister, Lubbers played a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape and contributing to European integration.

Born in Rotterdam on 7 May 1939, Lubbers pursued a career in economics and political science before entering politics. He became a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and served in various ministerial positions before being elected Prime Minister in 1982.

During his three consecutive terms as Prime Minister, Lubbers implemented significant economic reforms and promoted social progress. He also played a key role in the European integration process, particularly in the negotiations leading to the Maastricht Treaty, which established the European Union.

After stepping down as Prime Minister in 1994, Lubbers continued to be an active figure in international affairs. He served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2001 to 2005 and was appointed Special Envoy for Climate Change by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2007.
