Monkeypox: What to Know About the Rash

What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral disease that is similar to smallpox, but much milder. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is a member of the orthopoxvirus family. Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name "monkeypox"; however, the natural reservoir of the virus is believed to be rodents.

Symptoms of monkeypox

The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to those of smallpox, but milder. They include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rash

The rash is the most characteristic symptom of monkeypox. It typically starts as small, red bumps, which then develop into blisters and finally scabs. The rash can appear anywhere on the body, but it is most common on the face, hands, and feet.

When to contact a healthcare provider

If you think you may have monkeypox, it is important to contact a healthcare provider right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent serious complications.
